Original 9x12" Watercolor Study: Controlled Explorations 1 in Prussian Blue

75.00

this is an original watercolor study painting of 2 centimeter squares spaced 0.25 centimeter apart. The painting is part of a larger series titled, “controlled explorations” in which i painted various sizes of tightly spaced squares using only prussian blue paint. the pigment was mixed randomly and the square painted as quickly as possible. The result is a beautiful landscape of light and dark values that create patterns over the work as a whole.

painted on the highest quality arches brand cold-press watercolor paper. work measures 20x27cm (9x12”).

the series ‘controlled explorations’ is deeply inspired by prussian blue. where before blue paints were ground from expensive lapis lazuli, the accidental discovery of prussian blue in the early 1700s made rich blue pigment widely accessible to artists around the world. the rich vibrant hue of prussian blue has made possible such works as hokusai's great wave and van gogh’s starry night.
